Many beginning chefs want to improve their skills in the kitchen. Below are a few simple ways to help you improve your cooking ability:
- Use your hands. You may have a kitchen stocked with the most sophisticated cooking tools around, but your hands are still one of the best ways to determine the status of a food. You can tell when meat is cooked by testing its firmness with your hand, or you can gently squeeze a fruit to tell whether it’s ripe or not.
- Do not be afraid to use salt. Salt is one of the most basic seasonings used in cooking, yet you may not be adding enough of it. As you cook, you should salt nearly everything, including meat, pasta water, and vegetables. This brings out the natural flavor of the ingredients. Further, if you aren’t already, consider using kosher or sea salt.
- Get the best ingredients. Extremely fresh, high-quality ingredients naturally have a superior flavor that will make your home-cooked dishes taste better. Whenever possible, make some ingredients, such as breadcrumbs or mayonnaise, at home and shop around your local farmer’s market to find fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients that are extremely fresh.
