Bahamas Red Cross Discusses Packing Emergency Go Bags

The managing director of the Green Bay Group, Ltd., Lester Turnquest of Nassau, Bahamas, relies on his more than three decades of finance experience to help him in his role. Dedicated to supporting his Nassau, Bahamas, community, Lester Turnquest supports such organizations as the Bahamas branch of the International Red Cross.

As part of its mission to prevent suffering and protect life, the Bahamas Red Cross recently released a statement regarding hurricane preparedness. A large portion of the release encouraged readers to put together an emergency “go” bag. This bag is designed to store emergency provisions that individuals can grab quickly in case of a disaster.

This evacuation bag should contain a variety of important items. According to the Red Cross, individuals should pack non-perishable food for at least seven days and a three-day supply of bottled water. Ideally, bags need 1 gallon of water per person per day. This allows individuals not only to stay hydrated, but also have enough water for washing and to prepare food that requires it. Some of the best food to pack in a go bag includes peanut butter, whole-wheat crackers, and nuts or trail mixes. All of these foods are high-energy options that are convenient and healthy. Beyond those, individuals can pack such foods as granola bars and dried fruits.

In addition to food and water, a go bag should have plenty of first aid supplies and any necessary prescription medications. Flashlights and multipurpose tools can also be a great help during emergencies, as can emergency blankets and matches. The Red Cross release also said that individuals should pack plenty of clothing, personal toiletries, and cash.
